Ugo Sissa - "L'Occhio Quadrato di Ugo Sissa"

Architetto, pittore, fotografo, designer oltre che archeologo, nato a Mantova, Ugo Sissa visse a lungo tra Roma e Venezia. Fu proprio a Roma, dove approdò in 1934, che s'innamorò della fotografia e, assieme ai suo amici Giuseppe Pagano e Bruno Munari, si buttò a capo fitto in questa nuova arte. Passione che venne subito premiata: nel 1943 esce sull'oramai mitico annuario "Fotografia" del gruppo Editoriale Domus a cura di E.F. Scopinich un'immagine Ugo Sissa, "Ercole" a fianco di una altro straordinario architetto-fotografo Carlo Mollino. La via era aperta. Durante i numerosi viaggi che fece per esplorare i luoghi del passato e del presente, sempre molto attento all'aspetto umano e sociale che lo circondava, affidò alla pellicola la memoria ed il ricordo di queste esperienze, dei personaggi incontrati, dei luoghi visitati e delle situazioni vissute. Uno dei capitoli più affascinanti di questo lungo racconto in bianco e nero riguarda l'Iraq ed il Medio Oriente dove Ugo Sissa si trovava per lavoro, avendo vinto un concorso come capo architetto per il governo iracheno negli Anni Cinquanta. Ebbe così l'opportunità di dedicare tutto il suo tempo libero ad una delle sue più grandi passioni: l'archeologia. Ne emerge un Iraq dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato, ma si anima attraverso gli occhi dei suoi abitanti colti sul vivo, inconsci legami tra l'ieri e l'oggi. Altre immagine ci fanno rivivere l'Italia degli anni Trenta Quaranta, dal mondo mitico della Olivetti, dove lavorò come architetto, urbanista e designer alla semplicità della vita dei paesi del sud della penisola. I volti espressivi colti al volo caratterizzano gli scatti di "strada" degli Anni Trenta della Polonia e della Germania dove si era recato con una borsa di studio per studiarne l'architettura popolare e rurale. Le fotografie sono tutte in bianco e nero, la sua tecnica prediletta, scattate in formato 6x6 con la sua fedele e prediletta Rolleiflex: il suo occhi quadrato come amava definirla. One of the most fascinating chapter of this black and white novel is about Iraq and the Middle East where Ugo Sissa was for work after he won a student's grant as chief architect for the Iraqi government in the 50's. So he hat a wonderful opportunity to dedicate himself to one of his great passions: archeology. What comes up is an Iraq where time seems to be stopped, but it is alive in the eyes of the inhabitants caught instantly, unconscious bonds between yesterday and today. Other images make us relive the Italy of the 30's and 40's: from the mythical world of Olivetty, where he worked as architect, town planner and designer, to the simplicity of life in the southern villages of the peninsula. Instant images of expressive faces are what characterizes the "strada" (street) shots of the 30' in Poland and Germany where he went with his grant to study the popular and rural architecture. The photographs are all in black and white, his favorite technique, in 6X6 with his faithful and closest Rolleiflex: "His squared eye", how he loved to call it.
